– I have no idea. To be honest, I don’t even remember the race – replied a depressed Katarzyna Wasick in the interview area when asked about the final 50m freestyle event. She was expected to win a medal and was feeling good early on, but she ended up finishing fifth in 24.33 seconds.

Things shouldn’t be like this. Wasik burst into tears

The experienced Pole won qualifying on Saturday morning and was pleased with his time (24.27 seconds), which was second in the class. She swam even faster in the evening, clocking in at 24.23 seconds, third among all semifinalists. Polish fans are optimistic, and so are athletes training in the United States. She herself arrived in Paris in a very good mood. When a reporter asked about her health assessment, she responded that she was not 100 percent ready, but a thousand percent.

– My life is back to normal – she assures. Then she also talked about her lucky charm – a bracelet given to her by her loved ones.

The results earlier this year were also a good prediction. She won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Doha. She also achieved her dream of breaking the 24-second barrier (she achieved 23.95 seconds). However, the normally smiling swimmer arrived in the interview area in a dejected mood after Sunday’s final in Paris. Her fifth start at the Games culminated in a coveted Olympic medal.

– I think we’re all disappointed. What happened? I have no idea. I honestly don’t even remember the game. It’s hard for me to say anything. This is not my day. This is movement. This is what the 50th crawl looks like. You have to realize that anything can happen. The 32-year-old said it was just a hundredth of a second.

She tried to gather some happiness. – This is not my day. I hope he is. But there is still a fifth place in the final. You have to be happy about it too – she tried to convince the reporter, but it was hard to believe she herself felt that way at the moment.

Three years ago, she also finished fifth at the fifth Olympic Games in Tokyo. She admitted that she did not expect that after three years of hard training, she would be able to get fifth place again.

– Maybe God will give me the strength to go to Los Angeles… – she added.

Her voice trembled at times, but after mentioning the next Olympics in 2028, the 32-year-old swimmer began to cry.

At the age of 16, she participated in the Beijing Olympics for the first time. It’s been four years since Poland last won an Olympic swimming medal. At that time, Otylia Jędrzejczak won the gold medal in the 200m butterfly and two silver medals – the 100m butterfly and the 400m freestyle. Since then, at every subsequent Olympics, the highest hopes for more medals from the Olympics have been expressed, only to find them empty. It was now filled with Wasik’s tears.
