This Friday, the Spanish newspaper “La Verdad” reports a tragedy in a Belgian family living in Fortuna, near the Costa Blanca. A Belgian couple who have lived in this village near Murcia for fifteen years have in all likelihood tried to end their lives.
An acquaintance who used to drop by every day to check on them called Spanish police on Wednesday as she was worried they hadn’t opened to her for two days. The agents then discovered the couple lying in armchairs in the living room, in the middle of alcohol and anxiolytics. The 83-year-old lady was unfortunately already deceased. The 83-year-old man, in acute respiratory failure, was transferred in critical condition to hospital in Murcia.
The Spanish police have opened an investigation and, given the circumstances, favor the thesis of the attempted suicide. According to neighbors interviewed by the local newspaper, the Belgians were very sad and depressed because they were more and more isolated: the lady, who spoke almost no Spanish, hardly knew how to move around.
