Doha: Global Islamic scholar Dr. Yusuful Qaradawi passed away. He was 96 years old. He was the founder of the International Union of Muslim Scholars. Yusuful Qaradawi’s official Twitter account informed regarding his death. He passed away at Hamad Hospital following undergoing treatment.

His children and family were by his side at the time of his death. After the Luhar Namaz in Doha on Tuesday followingnoon, he will be buried in the Abu Humur Graveyard, followed by the Mayyat Namaz at the Grand Mosque.

He was born on September 9, 1926 in the village of Sift Turab in the Algarbiyah district of Egypt and was very notable for taking positions once morest imperialism and dictatorship.

Raised under the care of his uncle following his father died at the age of two, he memorized the Qur’an at the age of nine. Primary and secondary education was at Al-Azhar. Despite having to spend time in jail, he completed his secondary with second rank. Yusuf then joined Al-Azhar University’s Uswooluddin College for higher studies and passed with first rank in 1952-53. In 1954, he graduated from the Arabic language college with first rank. He obtained a diploma in Arabic literature in 1958, a master’s degree in Qur’an and Prophethood in 1960, and a doctorate in 1973 with a first class in a thesis on the role of zakat in solving social problems.

As a teenager, he was attracted to the Muslim Brotherhood (Al-Iqwanul Muslimoon), the movement of Imam Hasan al-Banna Shaheed in Egypt, and was imprisoned several times by the Egyptian government. He was imprisoned in 1949, ’54 and ’56. He used his Friday lectures as a platform for propaganda. The Palestine liberation struggle is given deep support and encouragement.

He has been highly influential in fostering anti-Zionist sentiment in the contemporary Arab world. He was a champion of the present-day Islamic world, but he was never ready to sing praises to the rulers. Constantly raising his voice for political and administrative reforms in Arab Muslim countries, he puts forward an alternative system called Islamic democracy. Comprehensive Islamic system has been submitted up to date. A strong advocate of Muslim unity, Qaradawi initiated debates between Sunni, Shia, Ibadiyya, and Saidiyya schools of thought. It also emphasizes the importance of multi-religious dialogue in the modern world.

Although Yusuf al-Qaradawi was banned from entering Egypt by the Hosni Mubarak regime, he returned to Egypt on Friday, February 18, 2011, in Tahrir Square as part of the Arab Revolution.

He served for a long time in Egypt as an official of the Department of Religious Affairs and as the head of the publication department of the Department of Culture in Azhar. After settling in Qatar in 1961, he became the head of the Qatar Secondary Religious Institute. In 1973, he established the Faculty of Islamic Studies at Qatar University and served as its Dean. He started the College of Sharia: and Islamic Studies at Qatar University in 1977 and remained its Dean until 1989-90. He was the head of the Prophetic Research Center of the university.

He held leadership positions in Algerian universities in 1990-91. Since his arrival in Doha in 1961, he had conducted Jumu’ah khutbah at Doha Umar Bin Khattab Mosque. Qaradawi’s program, broadcast live by Qatar Television Channel, has a large audience in the Arab world. His positions on the problems of the contemporary Islamic society are evaluated as the position of the Muslim world itself. Al Jazeera’s Sharia and Life program is one of the most watched television programs in the Arab world.

In 1973, he received his doctorate in Islamic studies. He was a member of several educational reform committees including the chairmanship of the Academic Council at Al-Amir Abdul Qadir University. He is the author of more than a hundred books. These books have been translated into many world languages ​​including Malayalam. Many of his lectures are also available in book form. The book Fiqhussaqat (Theology of Zakat) is believed to be the most authoritative extant text on the system of Zakat.

Islamic Publishing House (IPH) Kozhikode has translated and published many books of Qaradawi in Malayalam. Faith and Life, Tawakkul (Entrustment), Patience, Culture of the Preacher, Time in the Life of a Believer, Globalization and Muslims, Islamic Shari’ah – Principle and Practice, Islam and Art, Religious Extremism, Muslim Unity Validity and Possibilities, Prohibitions of Judgment, Fatwas of Qaradawi Part 1 and 2 are some of them.

Yusuful Qaradawi visited Kerala twice. He finally came to Kerala for the announcement of Shantapuram Al Jamia Al Islamia, an educational institution under Jamaat Islam. Qaradawi is also the Chairman of the Advisory Committee of Shantapuram Al Jamia Al Islamiyya.

In 2004, he was awarded the King Faisal International Award for his contributions to the field of Islamic scholarship.
