In a significant move, President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he has selected Dr. Mehmet Oz, a renowned heart surgeon and former television talk show personality, to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the crucial agency responsible for managing health insurance programs that serve millions of vulnerable Americans, including the elderly, low-income individuals, and those with disabilities.
In a statement, Trump praised Dr. Oz’s potential impact, declaring, “Dr. Oz will be a leader in incentivizing Disease Prevention, ensuring that we secure the best possible outcomes for our healthcare investments in this Great Country. He will also tackle waste and fraud within our Nation’s most costly Government Agency, which constitutes one-third of our overall healthcare spending and a quarter of our national budget.”
Despite having suffered a setback in his 2022 campaign for a Senate seat in Pennsylvania, Oz has consistently shown his support for Trump and has recently expressed his endorsement for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s candidacy for the top position at the Department of Health and Human Services, indicating his ongoing influence in health policy discussions.
If the Senate confirms Oz for the administrator role at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, he would oversee vital programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act, which together provide healthcare coverage for more than half of the American population.
Medicaid plays a crucial role in delivering nearly-free healthcare services to millions of the nation’s lowest-income children and adults, while Medicare ensures that older Americans and individuals with disabilities receive needed health insurance.
The Affordable Care Act, established during President Obama’s administration, is instrumental in extending health insurance options to millions of Americans who may not qualify for government assistance, yet do not receive insurance through their employers.
In a social media post last week, Oz articulated the need for comprehensive research on healthy lifestyle choices conducted by unbiased scientists, stating, “Americans need better research on healthy lifestyle choices from unbiased scientists, and @robertfkennedyjr can help as HHS secretary,” accompanied by a photograph featuring him and Kennedy.
However, Oz’s reputation has faced scrutiny, as he has been criticized for promoting questionable medical treatments and products during his television career. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he drew backlash for advocating the widespread availability of hydroxychloroquine, despite ongoing debates regarding its safety and efficacy.

**Interview with Dr. Mehmet Oz: A New Era for Health Policy at CMS**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Oz. Congratulations on your appointment as the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. How do you feel about taking on this significant responsibility?
**Dr. Oz:** Thank you for having me. It’s truly an honor to be selected for this role. Leading the CMS is a tremendous responsibility, especially given its pivotal role in providing health insurance to so many vulnerable Americans. I’m eager to make meaningful changes that prioritize disease prevention and improve healthcare outcomes.
**Editor:** President-elect Trump mentioned your plans to tackle waste and fraud within the agency. Can you elaborate on your strategies for addressing these issues?
**Dr. Oz:** Absolutely. Waste and fraud represent a significant drain on taxpayer money and ultimately affect the quality of care for patients. My approach will involve implementing data-driven strategies to identify and eliminate inefficiencies, enhancing oversight and transparency, and utilizing technology to streamline operations. We need to ensure that every dollar spent maximizes the health outcomes of Americans.
**Editor:** You mentioned an emphasis on disease prevention. What specific initiatives do you plan to introduce to promote this agenda?
**Dr. Oz:** Our focus on disease prevention will involve expanding access to preventive services, improving education about health and wellness, and incentivizing healthcare providers to prioritize preventive measures. If we can shift the focus from reactive treatment to proactive prevention, we can reduce the long-term costs associated with chronic diseases and enhance the quality of life for millions.
**Editor:** Following your recent endorsement of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the Department of Health and Human Services, how do you see collaboration between health agencies evolving under your leadership?
**Dr. Oz:** Collaboration is key in health policy. I believe that fostering strong relationships among different health agencies, including HHS, will help us create cohesive strategies that address the complexities of our healthcare system. We must work together to tackle issues like public health crises, mental health reform, and access to care effectively and efficiently.
**Editor:** Some may view your background as a television personality with skepticism in the context of healthcare policy. How do you respond to those critiques?
**Dr. Oz:** My background in media has given me a unique opportunity to connect with the public and raise awareness about important health issues. While I respect the skepticism, I believe my experiences as a surgeon and educator provide a solid foundation for leading CMS. I’m focused on evidence-based solutions and listening to the needs of our communities.
**Editor:** Thank you for your insights, Dr. Oz. We look forward to seeing how your leadership shapes the future of healthcare in America.
**Dr. Oz:** Thank you! I’m excited about the journey ahead and the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of so many Americans.
