The Government of Misiones has a solid commitment to investment in health infrastructure and human factors. At the “Dr Ramón Madariaga” Acute School Hospital of the Health Park, the Nuclear Medicine Service has a Gama Chamber, unique in the Province, in the public sphere that addresses a multiplicity of pathologies, the most frequent being cardiological and oncological. .
Dr. Gustavo Javier Goral, head of the Nuclear Medicine Service, indicated that he is the only one in the Province, in the public sphere. “In 2023 we had an increase in patient demand and they were covered,” he said.
He highlighted that “the most frequent pathologies were cardiac and oncological with the Pediatrics area. We work in coordination with the Health Park since the Nuclear Medicine Service requires coordination in receiving radioactive material, shifts and carrying out studies.”
The Gamma Camera is a piece of equipment that is used for imaging studies for patients with breast cancer, prostate cancer and the search for bone metastasis. The patient is injected with a radiopharmaceutical and an image is formed from which the information required to studies and treatment. The equipment has a double head of the latest technology. The Service also has other intraoperative equipment used to support the surgeon in the identification of sentinel nodes, in different pathologies such as breast cancer and melanoma.
Nuclear medicine is applied in cardiology in the evaluation of myocardial reality and cardiac ischemia. In the pediatric area, renal scintigraphy is performed in patients who have had repeated urinary infections, so renal function is evaluated and whether the kidney was affected.
Prevention, the best tool
One of the fundamental tools in the health system comes from prevention, which provides enormous added value to the early detection of pathologies that can be treated immediately.
Regarding this, Dr Goral indicated that “we have seen how the age of patients is decreasing that we did not see before. This has to do with the methods of early detection of pathologies; Oncological prevention is essential and the patient must attend check-ups because many types of cancer can be treated, being detected early.”
