DEPUTY Chairperson of Commission II DPR RI, Aria, said that the challenges for Indonesian democracy in the future of Prabowo Subianto’s government will be increasingly difficult, especially in restoring institutional integrity including law enforcement and state apparatus which have experienced damage after the 2024 election.

“Over the next 5 years, legal certainty is important, fair and independent law is the focus of our democracy. The existence of independent institutions and laws is an embodiment of how democracy can operate in the future check and balance,” he said in a discussion entitled ‘Prospects for Indonesian Democracy during the Prabowo Subianto Government’ in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/11).

Reflecting on the second period of Jokowi’s government, Aria emphasized that executive power appears to be more dominant than the legislature and judiciary. According to him, democracy will run healthily if the three institutions run in balance and do not interfere with each other.

“But in the last five years that has not been the case. “Executive power is too dominant by intervening with judicial and legislative powers such as the Corruption Eradication Commission, Supreme Court, Polri, MK, DPR, Political Parties, TNI/Polri being intervened,” explained Aria.

The PDIP politician encouraged the palace, especially President Prabowo, not to weaken democracy by repeating the pattern of intervention in the legislature and judiciary for his personal and group interests, as was done by President Jokowi.

“Things like this must be looked at, how can the power given to the president be restrained, so as not to maximize his power which causes this to happen? abuse of powerbecause this is something that the executive power can do,” he said.

Aria explained that to revitalize the democratic climate for the better, a president with integrity is needed who can carry out his functions check and balance institutional.

“The procedural democratic process may or may not work depending on the good will of a president, whether he is able to restrain his power from being used optimally for the interests of himself and his group,” he added.

Aria also does not deny that the presidential system that applies in Indonesia allows the President to be dominant and lead Indonesia towards autocracy, if it is not balanced by opposition forces and civil society movements.

“Indeed, one of the challenges in democracy is that the president’s power can become very large, especially the president as head of state, especially seeing that (Jokowi) yesterday was able to use all (institutions) as he pleased. “So with such great power as head of state, democracy can easily move in the other direction, namely autocracy,” he said.
