MEMBER of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives Irine Yusiana Roba Putri asked the government to relocate the settlements of residents who were victims of the flash flood disaster in Ternate City, North Maluku. The PDI-P Faction politician said she had discussed with the local river basin office (BWS) regarding the relocation of settlements in areas affected by flash floods.

“So that the area is normalized, so that the residents’ settlements are relocated to a safe place. The location near the lake is no longer used as a residential area so that in the future there will be no more incidents like this,” he said in an official statement, Wednesday (28/8).

He also urged the government to immediately provide assistance in providing housing for victims of the Ternate City flood disaster whose homes were destroyed by floods and landslides.

“The current and future handling is so that affected residents can get housing assistance. I have discussed with friends from PUPR and the City Government to immediately handle affected residents,” explained Irine.

The search for victims, he said, is expected to continue. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that it has deployed 10 heavy equipment or excavators to search for missing victims and clean up material carried by the flood.

“Searching for victims and improving access needs to be done quickly. Hopefully everything can be resolved well,” he said.

As reported, flash floods hit residential areas in Rua Village, Pulau Ternate District, Ternate City, North Maluku, early Sunday (25/8). As a result of the hydrometeorological disaster, 18 residents were reported dead and one person is still missing. (H-3)
