Hamburg (ots) Alliance of 43 European media and technology organizations launches EU-funded project TEMS (Trusted European Media Data Space).

In the future, European media should be able to exchange data and content securely and in compliance with data protection regulations and thus find new business models or distribution channels. This is the vision of a consortium of 43 companies and organizations from the media technology sector, which, following around two years of preparation, has now officially started work on the TEMS. The abbreviation TEMS stands for “Trusted European Media Data Space”. The participants from all over Europe represent hundreds of interest groups in the cultural and creative sectors from 14 countries with the common goal of designing and implementing such a data room.

The initiative is supported by the European Commission’s “Digital Europe” (DIGITAL) program and is a central element in the implementation of the European data strategy. With an investment of EUR 16.5 million, the consortium is setting a milestone in data use and exchange in the media sector. TEMS aims to support the economic development and future growth of local and regional media ecosystems in Europe.

“We are very pleased to be able to incorporate our concrete experiences from the DRIVE project into the idea of a European data space, where more than 20 German-speaking publishers already share their success data regarding specific content,” says Peter Kropsch, CEO of the dpa. Together with the management consultancy Schickler – also part of the TEMS consortium – the publishers and dpa at DRIVE analyze reader needs with the aim of increasing digital revenues.

Specifically, TEMS is intended to enable the widespread use of services, infrastructures and platforms. This will also include combating disinformation, target group analysis, data flow in production chains and the increasing integration of AI and virtual reality technologies.

TEMS will further develop existing media platforms and future data room infrastructures and offer interested media representatives from all sub-sectors open access to a common data room. This will support digital transformation and improve the competitiveness of the European media industry.

“Launching the project that will shape the European media data space is much more than just a strategic move. It is a necessity now that data is the new currency. By creating sustainable data-driven companies today, we are shaping it future of innovation in the digital age,” says Oscar Lazaro, CEO of the Innovalia Association, which coordinates the TEMS consortium.

“[…] By building these data rooms, companies might have greater confidence in their ability to use data to develop their businesses and business models and rely more heavily on the digital economy,” said Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager in an interview with Euronews.

“The EBU actively supports its members in their digital transformation,” said Antonio Arcidiacono, EBU Director of Technology and Innovation. “We believe that a media data room will facilitate the development and integration of data-driven technologies such as AI and promote innovation and collaboration along an increasingly complex value chain. The project is central to our ability to compete with the dominant US platforms to carry out our tasks in the areas of public information, entertainment and education, while fully respecting European rules and values.”

The official TEMS opening event will take place on October 24, 2023 at Euskal Irrati Telebista (EITB) in Bilbao. The TEMS project will be presented as part of the event. Representatives from Innovalia, France Télévisions, the European Commission, AFP and EITB will also speak.
