Dozens of people were killed in tribal clashes

At least 64 people have been killed in inter-tribal violence in a remote area of Papua New Guinea’s mountains.

According to the report of the foreign broadcasting organization, Police Commissioner David Manning has said that the officers and the army have removed the bodies of 64 people from the troubled area.

The report quoted the local police as saying that the clashes started early Sunday morning (February 18) in Wapenmanda district of Enga province.

The incident took place near the town of Wabag, 600 kilometers north-west of the capital Port Moresby, with heavy gunfire reported in the area.

A police spokesman said all the men had been shot dead during the tribal dispute, which the police officer described as the “worst incident” in the recent history of the Pacific.

The incident is believed to be the result of a conflict between the Sikh and Kaikan tribes.

According to the report, police received graphic videos and photos from the scene, which showed a pile of bloodied bodies on the side of the road.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albany has also expressed concern over the incident.

He said in an interview that the news coming from Papua New Guinea is very disturbing.

According to the report of the Australian news agency, there are speculations that the same tribes are involved in the tribal fighting, which killed more than 60 people during the bloody conflict last year in 2023. A lockdown was in effect for several months in Enga province in 2023.
