Dozens of migrants rescued in southern Greece

The Greek coast guard rescued around 120 migrants from a rocky stretch of coast in the south of the Peloponnese peninsula on Monday night. The swell had pushed their boat to the rocks of Cape Malea, where it ran aground. As the state broadcaster, citing the Coast Guard, reported on Monday, all the people are safe and have been temporarily housed in a school in the small port of Neapoli Voion.

The boat had started from the Turkish Aegean coast and was on its way to Italy. It was initially unclear which countries the migrants came from, as the state broadcaster reported.

Trafficker gangs keep trying to bring migrants from Turkey and countries in North Africa and the Middle East to the EU countries of Greece, Cyprus and Italy. Engine damage or leaks often occur on the outdated boats and accidents occur time and once more. On June 14, hundreds of people died when a completely overcrowded fishing cutter sank around 50 nautical miles west of Greece.
