Dozens of inhabitants of Santa Elena de Uairén affected by rainfall (+ photos)

The heavy rains that have occurred in recent days have left several families in the south of Bolívar state quite affected.

In Santa Elena de Uairén, both streams and the river have risen, as a result of the rains that lasted for several hours this Friday night.

An inhabitant, who preferred to protect her identity, commented to scoop that at 6:00 pm this Friday a heavy downpour began affecting various sectors of the Gran Sabana municipality, including Brisas de Sampay, Cielo Azul, El Nazareno, Andrés Bello, Ezequiel Zamora, Negro Primero, Briceño, Keewey II, Caño Yellow, among others.

“All these areas are extremely flooded, there are already many people affected once more, and even areas of the center of Santa Elena, were also very affected,” he added.

He said that more than 100 families were affected in this opportunity, which were forced to leave their homes to take refuge in the sites that were prepared by the Citizen Security Organizations.

According to the citizen, the places that have served as a shelter are the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB), the House of Culture, among others, “but they are not shelters as such, these people do not have any type of comfort there, They have nowhere to sleep, relieve themselves, they have to ask for collaboration so they can have supplies to clean themselves.”

The floods have brought loss of belongings to the neighbors; diseases such as scabies, skin rashes, flu; and outbreak of animals such as toads, snakes and mosquitoes.

Trade in Santa Elena de Uairén has been greatly affected, “many have lost their merchandise, shelves, appliances have been damaged,” said the citizen.

Lack of maintenance

Another of the factors by which the sectors are flooded with the rains, is due to the lack of maintenance of the drains, which collapse turning the streets and avenues into swimming pools, he said.

The resident indicated that the sewers and drains are covered with dirt and garbage, she also said that the streams and the river channel are not properly maintained, she assured that as soon as it rains the town is flooded, putting it at risk.

“If they (personnel from the mayor’s office) were in charge of draining the sewers, the canals; this would not be happening, but unfortunately they do not take care of helping the people, ”he launched.

Quebrada Sampay

At the beginning of last week, residents of the municipality were affected by the flooding of the Quebrada Sampay, affecting several homes.

As a result of the floods, Civil Protection commissions approached the affected areas to provide support.

Gran Sabana Civil Protection personnel pointed out that the agency is alert in case the Uairén River will overflow completely and start with the evacuation plan.

The inhabitant made a call to the governor, Ángel Marcano and the mayor, Manuel de Jesús Valléz, to come to the places and help the affected people.

So far there is no specific number of people affected by the rains, they indicated from the mayor’s office that they continue to carry out the census to know the victims.

El Callao and El Dorado

In recent days, several communities in El Callao and El Dorado have been affected by the flooding of the Yuruari and Cuyuní rivers, respectively.

In El Callao, 18 sectors are affected by the overflow of the tributary, which are: La Chalana, El Banqueo I, El Banqueo II, Mi Alegría, Los Andés, La Lagunita, Yuruari, El Limón, Fortaleza El Limón, La Ramona , Cerro El Molino, July 5, Los Próceres, Barrio Obrero, Mata Palo, Nacupay, Brisa Unida de Nacupay, Nuevo Milenium de Nacupay.

A few days ago, Mayor Coromoto Lugo, accompanied by the Secretary of Citizen Security, Edgar Colina Reyes, visited several shelters and areas affected by the floods.

In El Dorado, they remain alert due to the flooding of the Cuyuní River, the inhabitants do not lower their guard in this regard.
