Four people were killed and 30 seriously injured in Colombia on Sunday when a runway collapsed at a bullring during a popular event, officials said.
“There are four dead at the moment, two women, a man and a child,” said Jose Ricardo Orozco, governor of Tolima province, following the incident in the city of El Espinal.
An entire section of three floors of the wooden runways filled with spectators collapsed, causing dozens of people to fall to the ground, according to photos posted on social media. They are still taking the wounded to area hospitals for treatment.
Local civil defense official Luis Fernando Velez explained that the runway was full when it collapsed. The event was part of the festivities surrounding the area’s most popular San Pedro festival.
Orozco stressed that the provincial government will act to ban this type of dangerous activity, which promotes animal abuse.
Several people were injured Saturday in accidents during bullfighting in El Espinal, a city of regarding 78,000 people located 150 km from the capital Bogota.
