According to media reports, more than 30 people were killed in an accident involving a bus and several other vehicles in Egypt, while international news agencies spoke of 32 and 35 victims respectively. 53 other people were injured, the state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported on Saturday. Other sources said 60 were injured. Accordingly, the accident occurred near Wadi al-Natrun in the north of the country on the desert road between Cairo and Alexandria.
Of the dead, at least 18 were burned, the newspaper reported. Images could be seen in online media showing, among other things, an overturned truck. At least one bus, a minibus and numerous cars appeared to be largely burned, with some of them still ablaze. Spectators and queues of cars could also be seen.
Serious traffic accidents are common in Egypt. The roads are often in poor condition and traffic rules are often ignored. According to official figures, around 7,000 people died in traffic accidents in 2021 in the country with 105 million inhabitants.
