Download entire Netflix in three minutes, setting record for fastest data transfer on the Internet

A group of researchers from University College London (UCL) has broken the record for the fastest data transfer on the Internet.

They transferred data at a speed of 178 terabytes (TB) per second during an experiment, which is 20 percent faster than Japan’s record of 150 TBPS.

In an interview with BBC Brazil, Galdino explained that information on the Internet is transmitted by light through fiber-optic cables.

Elaborating on this, he said that the global fiber optic infrastructure transmits more than 95% of data on the Internet. This traffic has grown rapidly in the last 15 years.’

“We developed algorithms in our research that allowed us to reach the maximum hypothetical speed of these cars in each of them,” said Lidia Galdino, an engineer from Brazil. And we built different repeater technologies that allowed us to double the number of lenses on the road. So in this way we were able to create a record of 178 TBPS’.

Researchers say that this technology may also affect 5G internet as its speed is not even close to that.

Note that Singapore has the world’s fastest internet connection for home users. It takes more than 4 years for a user to download all Netflix content there. In a country like Brazil, it can take more than 14 years to download the entire Netflix.
