Tomorrow Wednesday (08/04) parliamentary elections are held, as well as the second round of the presidential elections, which are expected to result in a change of the political scene in North Macedonia, as the right-wing opposition party VMRO-DPMNE is heading for a major “double” election win.
A total of 17 parties and coalitions of parties are participating in tomorrow’s parliamentary elections to elect the new Parliament, which has 120 members.
According to estimates of political analysts in Skopje, VMRO-DPMNE is expected to take about 55 seats (or more) from tomorrow’s parliamentary elections, while the ruling Social Democratic Party (SDSM) which is really collapsing will be reduced to only about 25 seats.
However, according to all indications, VMRO-DPMNE is not going to win independence from tomorrow’s elections, but even in case of independence, it will ally itself with an Albanian party to form a government. After all, an Albanian party always participates in all the governments of North Macedonia, among other things to maintain the still fragile international balance in the country. Albanians make up 25% of the population of North Macedonia.
VMRO-DPMNE leader Christian Mickoski has repeatedly stated that his preferred government partner is a coalition of opposition Albanian parties called “Worth” over the dominant Albanian party in North Macedonia, Ali Ahmet’s DUI, which in all the coalition governments in the country in the last twenty years to now “pass” to the opposition.
As for the second round of the presidential elections, there things are clear, since the VMRO-DPMNE candidate, Gordana Silianovska, won the first round of the presidential elections held on April 24, in which seven candidates participated, by twice the margin of the main of the opponent, the outgoing Social Democrat president of the country, Stevo Pedarovski (Silanovska received 40% compared to Pedarovski’s 20%). All that remains tomorrow is for the VMRO-DPMNE candidate to validate her victory and be elected as its new president of North Macedonia for the next five years.
In order for the second round of the presidential elections to be considered valid, the participation rate must exceed 40% (in the first round of the presidential elections, the participation rate was close to 50%). Otherwise, the presidential elections are canceled and re-announced. There is no binding participation limit for parliamentary elections.
The electorate in North Macedonia amounts to 1.8 million voters. The polls will open at 07:00 local time (08:00 Greek time) and close at 19:00 (20:00 Greek time). The first indicative results are expected to be known late Wednesday night.
