Pasquale Striano and the hunt for Cardinal Giovanni Becciu and his “power system”: it is the latest incredible revelation of the Dossier case. The lieutenant of the Guardia di Finanza, in fact, also investigated people very close to Becciu: the financier Raffaele Mincione, the minute official of the Secretariat of State Fabrizio Tirabassi, the broker Gianluigi Torzi, the witness Luciano Capaldo and Cecilia Marogna. But at whose instigation? Who would have given the order to the financier to act? Why would he do that? Luca Fazzo reconstructs the story on Il Giornale. The story of Striano’s incredible hunt for Becciu begins with three letters signed “Francesco” and accompanied by the papal coat of arms. Dated 2 and 5 July 2019 and 2 February 2020 are the letters in which the Pope gives his green light to the pursuit of the affairs of the unfaithful cardinal, giving full powers to the Vatican promoters of justice.

The Vatican opens an investigation into the Striano & Co. files. Hunt for spies

It is an “assignment of extraordinary scope – underlines Fazzo – which authorizes the prosecutors of San Pietro to use sources, consultants and databases in a practically unlimited way”. Precisely following the July letters, “an order to dig into Becciu’s friends reaches its destination on the most unthinkable table – explains the journalist – that of Pasquale Striano, lieutenant of the Financial Police who has long been serving at the DNA, the national anti-mafia prosecutor’s office” . Precisely in July 2019, the Vatican’s investigations gained momentum: on 2 July Francis ordered further investigations into the financing requested from the IOR to cover a building speculation in London by Monsignor Pena Parra and, at the same time, ordered the Promoter of Justice Alessandro Diddi to monitor the institute adopting “any type of measure”. Three days later, Bergoglio once more issues a second order giving the Promoter the possibility of intercepting by any means user communications, fixed and mobile, and any other communication towards subjects whose activities are “useful for carrying out the investigations”.

“Come Tortora”, “Stalinian Trial”, outcry at the conference on the Becciu case

Papal decisions aside, today it is clear that between 19 and 22 July, Striano carried out investigations on three of those investigated and convicted in the trial together with Becciu and Marogna: they are Raffaele Mincione, Fabrizio Tirabassi and Gianluigi Torzi. But he doesn’t stop there. The financier then does more: he also asks questions regarding Marogna and the trial witness Luciano Capaldo. But – as Fazzo underlines – “they are initiatives that Striano takes when the case has already broken out, and the names to be scrutinized might have come to him from anyone. Instead, on July 2nd and 5th, no one knows those three names.” Questions upon questions that are now widening given the investigation opened by the Vatican promoters of justice into what happened. An investigation which the promoter of justice Alessandro Diddi explained to our newspaper yesterday was only “a necessary act”.
