Arrest the two spies to avoid the contamination of the investigations and the cover-up of the truth. It is with this motivation that the prosecutor of Perugia, Raffaele Cantone, will examine in front of the three judges of the Review Court the request for house arrest for the financier Pasquale Striano and the former prosecutor Antonio Laudati, investigated for unauthorized access to the databases and disclosure of the secret in complicity with the three journalists of Domani Giovanni Tizian, Nello Trocchia and Stefano Vergine.
Because the investigation into the alleged dossiers carried out by the Antimafia to the detriment of center-right politicians and VIPs is far from being in its final stages. Indeed, it is continuing to trace mandates and accomplices. “At present, having to consider it unlikely, given the enormous quantity of information illegally acquired, that Striano could have operated to please Tizian or other journalists, further investigations are underway aimed at understanding, where possible, on whose behalf Striano could have acted”, we read in the document with which Cantone, last July, asked the investigating judge of Perugia to order house arrest for the financier, on the basis of the existence of the danger of repetition of the crime and tampering with evidence, a need, the latter, also identified for Laudati. The preliminary investigations judge, although he fully embraced the accusation and recognized the serious and multiple indications of guilt, did not consider the precautionary measure order necessary, justifying the rejection with the fact that Striano was thrown out of the window by the DNA SOS group and Laudati is retired. Yet, for the Prosecutor, the two suspects, especially the financier, represent a danger to the investigation. And today he will outline to the Review the circumstances for which Striano and Laudati must be arrested.
The most serious position is that of the financier, whose “attempt to tamper with the evidence had in fact already occurred with the production, during questioning at the Rome Prosecutor’s Office, of the memo that later turned out to be fake”, which was allegedly written by Tizian and Vergine to save their source and hide the extent of the system. A conduct that would have continued with the leak of news, when Striano “legitimately availed himself of the right to remain silent but, something very serious and which makes the danger of tampering with evidence current and concrete, he met and/or tried to contact other suspects, sent the invitation containing the charges to journalists, made statements to journalists and gave an interview to the television program Le Iene”, writes Cantone. Who reports the meetings with some co-defendants and the exchange with reporters, including the voice messages with Antonio Massari, of Il Fatto Quotidiano, to whom he reveals: “I was told a few days ago: ‘Look Pasquale, there’s also Magistratura Democratica against Cantone'”.
Furthermore, the Prosecutor’s Office believes there is a risk of the crime being repeated, given that Striano, although no longer with the SOS group, is still in service, and “especially in light of the complex relationships he has demonstrated to have and such that it is not possible to exclude that he may also operate through third parties”, it is stated. A risk that would be reinforced by the fact that, for the investigators, the abusive access to the databases would not have stopped even in the face of the notices of investigation, which is why the investigations are focused on the search for the “other Strianos”. In relation to Laudati, the risk of contamination concerns a sort of interest in stealing the progress of the investigation with some colleagues and the sending of dozens of emails, containing an attempt at a defense believed to be false, to a list of contacts, including high officials, politicians and 007. Today the lawyers will try to convince the Review Court to release the two suspects.
