Some of the dumbbells don’t even have the protective rubber layer anymore. “Imagine picking up on your toe the metal part of a 30kg dumbbell, fallen at a right angle from a height of 70cm,” imagines, horrified, a student and weightlifting enthusiast. And to question: “They expect one of us to lose a toe to finally change the structure?” In addition to the few injuries suffered by certain athletes, one of them even broke his smartphone. In an email exchange dated September between a student and the secretariat of the Dorigny sports center, the institution assured that it would take the necessary measures to avoid future accidents. She forwarded the file to the weight room manager. However, it is clear that these precautions have been forgotten. At the end of December, the metallic crashes of falling dumbbells could still be heard echoing through the gym.
The University administration says it has been aware of the situation since the beginning of December. She claims to have ordered a new structure, which has not yet arrived. “Access to the old rack is therefore no longer possible for security reasons,” says Géraldine Falbriard, spokesperson for UNIL.
