Today, the US was warning Iran against the United Nations Security Council, not to target either Iran or Israel, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the “deadly cycle of eye-for-an-eye violence must be closed”. in the Middle East.
“Our actions were defensive in nature,” US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the Council.
“Let me be clear: The Iranian regime will be held accountable for its actions. And we strongly warn Iran – or its proxies – against taking action against the US or further action against Israel,” he stressed.
For his part, France’s UN ambassador Nicolas de Riviere said France wants the Security Council to “show unity and speak with one voice” in order to de-escalate the situation. Thomas-Greenfield said the Council should condemn Iran’s attack and impose “severe consequences” on Iran’s Revolutionary Guards for their actions.
“We have a collective responsibility as members of the Security Council to impose additional sanctions on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for their support of terrorism and for flouting so many Council resolutions,” the US ambassador pointed out.
At the same time, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, praised Iran for the “excellent” restraint it has shown in recent months and stressed that the missile attack on Israel could not be “presented as if this all happened in a vacuum, as if nothing is happening (…) in Lebanon and Gaza, in Syria, in Yemen”.
“But it happened and it led to a new, very dangerous spiral of an expanding conflict in the Middle East,” Nebenzia stressed.
