‘Don’t smoke in bed’: Fire claims life of 81-year-old woman

The Brussels fire department responded to a fire on the second floor of a building on Avenue Montjoie in Uccle in the early hours of Saturday. Residents in the Marlow area were evacuated by police while the firefighters dealt with the blaze, which caused a release of black smoke. Tragically, the body of an elderly resident was discovered in her bed during the operation. “The octogenarian lady was on oxygen. The origin of the fire remains to be determined, but the accidental track is preferred. After verification and ventilation, the other occupants of the building were able to return to their homes,” said Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels fire brigade. Derieuw advises people not to smoke in bed or in a drowsy state in an armchair, as oxygen is an accelerant, and to be mindful of sources of heat, flames, and sparks.
