“Don’t come. We will continue to enforce our laws and secure our border.” The message to those who want to undertake a “dangerous journey” to leave their country and enter another illegally is delivered by FdI MP Sara Kelany, but the first to pronounce those words is not a centre-right representative. “Don’t show this video to Elly and her people,” reads a post by Fratelli d’Italia on social media in which Kelany reads the appeal to migrants: “There are legal methods by which immigration must and can occur. But we will discourage illegal immigration as one of our priorities and anyone arriving at our border will be turned away.” Then the twist: “These are not my words but those of Kamala Harris,” explains the MP, “the Democratic Party’s candidate for the presidency of the United States. But please, don’t let Elly Schlein know.”

In short, the Italian left is clapping its hands out over the candidacy of the vice president against Donald Trump following Joe Biden’s step back – the nomination has not yet been made official but the path among US Democrats seems clear – but it is ignoring the positions on immigration, who knows why…
