The Journalism student asked his guide professor to do his thesis around the popular manga Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. The idea was well received by the university and is already in its final research process. The student wanted to address the deconstruction of masculinity in the saga throughout the different decades.

Much expectation and surprise generated the title of a university thesis spread through Twitter, since the research has as its central theme the popular manga Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

It all started on Saturday, when Javier Sandovaljournalist and academic from the University of La Frontera (Ufro), shared on his Twitter profile the cover of the investigation that his student is developing Stephen Briones.

I’m just here to show what happens when an otaku teacher and student join forces on a journalism thesis. Don’t let it be said that you can’t graduate thanks to anime,” the teacher wrote on the social network.

“Historical evolution of the stereotype of masculinity in the narrative and visual construction of the work JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure“, was the specific topic that the university student chose to carry out his thesis and which caught the attention of users.

In a conversation with BioBioChile, Briones’ guiding teacher explained that the student wanted to develop a theme inspired by this anime and the idea of study the deconstruction of masculinity throughout the decades within this work.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure corresponds to a manga series created in the late 80’s by the Japanese mangaka Hirohiko Arakiwhose work has millions of printed copies and is considered one of the best sellers in the world.

“Each manga saga reflects a specific time in the history of humanity and the art takes on those nuances. So the concept of masculinity has also been deconstructed through the different sagas, “said the academic.

Teachers’ reactions

The university professor affirmed that they have been free to develop different topics as long as the requirements and academic protocols established by the study house are met.

“There are spaces not only for interculturality or mass communication, but also for other cultural samples and how the phenomenon of communication develops in these instances,” Sandoval said.

“The teachers have given us positive feedback regarding the approach to the subject, but not only because it is anime and manga, but also because there is a critical view of how masculinity is approached in Eastern narrative,” added the professional.

Until now, the investigation carried out by the Journalism student is still in process and at the end of this year he will present the result, which already has several enthusiasts.
