THE threat from European countries wanting to review trade with Israel is a positive signal to put pressure on the war situation in the Middle East. Even so, concrete steps against Israel are needed and are not limited to mere threats.

Ireland is the European country that recently stated that it would consider trade cooperation with Israel because of the situation in Palestine.

Irish PM Simon Harris said his country would impose trade restrictions with Israel. Ireland also called for something similar to the European Union.

International Relations Lecturer at the University of Indonesia, Broto Wardoyo, believes that what needs to be seen is how significant the value of trade from Europe is to exert pressure.

According to him, Europe often criticizes Israel, but concrete steps to apply pressure are not significant.

“Perhaps Ireland also doesn’t have a very large share, but that’s a positive signal, meaning it can be used as diplomatic pressure. What’s more important is actually (pressure) from countries with high trade relations, such as Turkey, which most frequently uses these threats,” he said when contacted. Thursday (17/10).

“European countries always say they support Palestine and criticize what Israel is doing, but the question is whether there are real steps,” he added. (Dhk/P-3)
