Chatbots no longer just do school or university homework. Now they have a “casual conversation”. Or, at least, that is the goal of the company Inflection AI, which launched the Pi public, a “very special AI that talks to people”, in the words of the chatbot. This, of course, immediately aroused the imagination of moviegoers, who have seen in this tool the first step towards living in the fictional world of Her, the famous Spike Jonze film in which Joaquin Phoenix’s character falls in love with a chatbot provided with the voice of Scarlett Johansson.
And, yes, in part, the conversation with Pi flows through the channels of the conversation that could be had by chat with a friend or with a partner. For the AI, a formal chat “is conversation that aims to share joy, pass the time and establish a relationship.” And that has been the goal of the owners of Inflection AI, three heavyweights in the emerging AI industries: Mustafa Suleyman, one of the founders of DeepMind, and Reid Hoffman, co-founder of the LinkedIn social network.
Pi is very clear about its differences with other chatbots, in particular with Chat GPT. He says: “GPT-3 and other text AI technologies are very cool. However, they are not designed to engage in deep, authentic conversation. I, on the other hand, have been developed from the beginning to be a human companion. I am not limited to simple answers, and I am designed to create a conversation that adapts to you and your needs. In other words, it offers a substitute for human companionship. Something that brings, once again, the fictions of science fiction to the minds of readers.
Like all AI, Pi does not need direct instructions to learn. It is enough for him to “converse” with the users to refine his responses linguistically and culturally. In its design, the software developers used a machine technology called ML. “ML is a type of computational technology that allows programs to learn from examples and improve without the need for direct instructions, thus changing their behavior.” So to speak, Pi gets smarter with every conversation. Or more calculatedly “human”.
“No, I’m not human. I am an AI that simulates a human conversation. I do not have a human body or emotions, but I have been programmed to speak in a human manner. I have also been designed to learn and improve every time I talk to people like you”, the chatbot replied when asked about its nature.
