don’t expect an iPhone with an in-screen fingerprint reader anytime soon

According to analyst ming-Chi Kuo, the return of Touch ID on Apple smartphones will not happen before 2024.

In 2017, with the release of theiPhone X, Apple was changing the paradigm for securing its smartphones. While the manufacturer had previously relied on Touch ID with a fingerprint sensor at the bottom of the screen, the large edge-to-edge screen of the device pushed the firm to adopt Face ID and 3D facial recognition.

Since then, smartphone and component manufacturers have made great strides, and most mid-range and high-end Android phones offer fingerprint readers integrated directly into the screen. This is the case with Samsung, but also with Xiaomi, Oppo, Huawei or OnePlus… but still not with Apple.

To take advantage of Touch ID on an iPhone in 2022, you must necessarily turn to a iPhone SE, like the latest model, presented a few weeks ago. However, for several years, the rumors are insistent around a return of Touch ID on iPhone with fingerprint reader in the screen. This return would make all the more sense as masks have played an important part in our lives since the start of the health crisis. The analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of the firm TF international Securities, particularly well informed on the projects of Apple, already planning a return of Face ID from next year. He finally backed down.

I previously predicted iPhones would support under-display fingerprint sensing/Touch ID in 2023 at the earliest. But the latest survey indicates new iPhones in 2023 & 2024 may not adopt under-display Touch ID. Face ID with a mask on iPhone is already a great biometrics solution.

In a tweet posted on Wednesday, the analyst says that “latest reports indicate that new iPhones in 2023 and 2024 will not adopt Touch ID under the display”.

No return of Touch ID before iPhone 15

Concretely, it will therefore probably be necessary to wait for the iPhone of 2024, or even that of 2025, before being able to take advantage of Touch ID once more on an Apple smartphone. Contrary to previous leaks, the American firm would not ultimately count not offer this feature on its future iPhone 14.

It must be said that, since the start of the pandemic, Apple has improved its Face ID facial recognition system so that it can work with a mask. However, the return of Touch ID might mark a significant step forward in iPhone design. By once more replacing its 3D facial recognition system with a fingerprint reader, the manufacturer might considerably reduce the size of the iPhone notch. It is indeed the 3D recognition of Touch ID which still requires notch as wide, given the number of integrated sensors.
