DONOVAN Mitchell is focused on bringing his team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, to the NBA title next season after he quashed speculation of a move to the New York Knicks by signing a new contract.

“This is a feeling of relief. I can breathe a sigh of relief now,” Mitchell said in his first statement after extending his contract, quoted on the NBA website.

Mitchell, who was previously rumored to want to play in his hometown, New York, has now confirmed his commitment to the Cavaliers.

“I love this city,” he said.

With this contract extension, Mitchell ensures he is not going anywhere in the near future and all rumors surrounding his future have disappeared.

Since joining the Cavaliers in 2022 after transferring from the Utah Jazz, Mitchell immediately felt like he fit into the atmosphere of the city and its fans.

Despite having to face the harsh winter, he admits he can adapt and even jokes that he can, “Get dressed
better in cold weather.”

Along with a solid young core of players, Mitchell has become a key element in the Cavaliers’ efforts to return to the NBA title race.

Although many doubted his commitment, especially after several injuries last season, Mitchell ensured he was in the right position, both physically and mentally, to take the Cavaliers to the next level.

“This is my first media day in three years where no one asked me if I was going,” said Mitchell, who faced frequent questions about his future last season.

“It’s not just me who is tired, but also my teammates,” he added.

Mitchell said the pressure was now gone.

“Now, the most important thing is the expectation to achieve big things. Signing a contract is not the final destination, but the beginning of our journey,” he stressed.

Entering his eighth season, Mitchell is increasingly careful about maintaining fitness. He is now working with a private chef and giving his body more time to recover after suffering knee and calf injuries last season.

With the same roster but under the tutelage of a new coach, Kenny Atkinson, Mitchell is ready to face the challenges of this season.

Atkinson, known for his dedication, even called Mitchell in the middle of the night during the Olympics to discuss tactics.

“We have connected together. The dedication he has shown is extraordinary,” concluded Mitchell. (Ant/Z-1)
