“An indispensable voice in our democratic, free society”: The award will be presented on September 12.

This year’s M100 Media Awards were awarded to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani. In defense of the vote, Potsdam Mayor Mike Schubert said the two were “indispensable voices in our democratic, free society.” Tusk represents “the relentless struggle against authoritarian regimes”. Osmani “worked with determination and vision to build a young democracy in a region long riddled with conflict.”

According to organizers, the M100 Media Awards honor courageous women and girls, as well as men who protest against oppression in their home countries and defend freedom and human rights. The Unadulterated Award will be presented at a media conference on September 12.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will also speak at the event in Potsdam, according to organizers. The awards ceremony was preceded by discussions between around 80 editors-in-chief and representatives from science, politics and civil society. The focus will be on the impact of disinformation and Europe’s ability to defend itself in the face of the war in Ukraine.

Last year, the Iranian Freedom Movement “Women, Life, Freedom” was honored. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a speech of praise. Previous winners include Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny and the People of Ukraine.
