Donald Trump will appear in an Atlanta jail this Thursday to face charges stemming from plans to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election, in the fourth criminal case this year against the former Republican president of the United States.

Like other defendants in Atlanta, Trump will have to appear at the Fulton County Jail to be fingerprinted and photographed. The mugshot image of him is likely to be widely circulated by both supporters and critics in his campaign to regain the presidency in the November 2024 election.

The Republican is expected to be released after prison personnel have taken his fingerprints and photo, and after depositing the $200,000 bail agreed with the Prosecutor’s Office.

This is Trump’s fourth criminal indictment, but the first in which he is cited in jail and also the first to have a mugshot taken of him. In the previous three, he had appeared in different courts for the reading of charges.

Trump faces 13 felony counts, including RICO, which is often used to prosecute organized crime syndicates, for pressuring state officials to reverse his Georgia election loss to Democratic President Joe Biden. He was charged following an investigation led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

Trump, 77, denied committing any wrongdoing and said this criminal case, as well as the other three, are politically motivated. In all he pleaded not guilty.

One of the main pieces of evidence against him is the recording of a January 2021 call in which he asked Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” 11,780 votes for him, one more than Biden had gotten.

At least nine of the 19 defendants in this alleged mafia plot have already turned themselves in at Fulton prison and have been released after paying bail. Yesterday, former Trump lawyer and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani did it, who had to pay $150,000 to go free.

The former president accepted bail conditions that prohibit him from threatening witnesses or his 18 co-defendants in the case. On Wednesday, Trump added Atlanta attorney Steven Sadow to his legal team, according to a court filing.

According to CNN, Drew Findling, the lawyer who has defended Trump in this case, will be replaced by Sadow, a professional with an office in Atlanta whose website defines him as a “special legal advisor for the defense of white collar crimes and high profile cases. A source close to Trump explained to the same chain that it is not about Findling’s performance, while another justified the change because Sadow is “the best criminal defense attorney in Georgia.”

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered the closure of airspace over the prison starting at 6:45 p.m. (local time, 22:45 GMT). The jail has a reputation for bleak conditions that have inspired rap songs and sparked an investigation by the US Department of Justice.

A growing number of Trump supporters, some carrying flags, gathered outside the jail awaiting his arrival.

“I am here because I am horrified by what is happening,” said Bob Kunst, 81, a retiree who said he had driven from Miami Beach and stood outside the prison holding a homemade sign that read “Lock Up Biden.”

Trump called for protests across the country after his first criminal indictment in New York in March, sparking fears of violent riots similar to the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters.
