A MAN attending a Donald Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday (7/13) was killed in a shooting incident. The man died while trying to protect his family during an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old volunteer fire chief, was shot and killed following jumping toward his two children and wife as gunfire rang out.

“Corey died a hero,” Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said at a news conference Sunday (7/14).

Pennsylvania State Police said the other two people who were shot were David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74. Both were in stable condition following receiving treatment.

Josh Shapiro said he has spoken to Comperatore’s wife and two daughters.

“Corey goes to church every Sunday. Cory loves his community. Most of all, Corey loves his family,” Shapiro said.

He said that Comperatore was a staunch supporter of Donald Trump.

“Corey was the best of us. May his memory be a blessing. Last night was a shock, political differences can never be resolved through violence,” Shapiro said.

State police said Comperatore lived in Sarver, regarding 12 miles (19 kilometers) from the campaign site in Butler, Pennsylvania.

In addition to his volunteer work as a firefighter, he works as a project and tooling engineer at a plastics manufacturing company.

“He was a good guy. We may not have shared the same political views, but that didn’t stop him from being a good friend and neighbor,” said neighbor Matt Achilles.

“He donated money to us when I was in the hospital and he always comes to our yard bazaar. He always waves when I pass his house,” Achilles said.

One bullet, out of regarding six to eight shots fired by the perpetrator, hit Donald Trump in the ear.

The gunman, named by authorities as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot and killed by U.S. Secret Service agents protecting former President Trump.
