The Republican Party on Monday crowned former US President Donald Trump as its candidate for the White House in an epic ceremony that elevated him to the status of conservative messiah following surviving an assassination attempt.
The first day of the Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee, in the key state of Wisconsin, left an image to remember: Trump made a surprise reappearance, before a totally devoted audience, and with his right ear bandaged due to the wound he suffered when he was shot on Saturday at a rally in Pennsylvania.
The screens in the stadium hosting the convention showed the New York tycoon walking with a serious face through the corridors until he reached a special tribune with his family and his vice-presidential candidate, Senator JD Vance, another of the surprises of the day.
Tears of emotion
The scene was full of details worthy of an epic drama. In addition to the bandage on his ear, he raised his fist in the same gesture he made seconds following saving his life by just one centimeter.
The crowd chanted “Fight,” a slogan that has become the Trumpist rallying cry ever since.
The applause was so moving that even Trump, who detests weakness, showed a sad face.
Ann Clark, a Republican delegate from Michigan, might not hold back her tears at what she was witnessing.
“He might have stayed home recovering, but he is here for us. We are very blessed,” explained this woman to EFE, who is clear that Trump must return to the White House following the November elections. “Someone who did this is someone who is going to take care of us,” she said.
The mystery of the Vice Presidency has been cleared up
Hours before his star appearance, in that same sports palace, the nearly 2,400 Republican Party delegates had voted en bloc in favor of Trump’s nomination.
They also unanimously accepted the choice of JD Vance, senator for Ohio and author of a best-selling autobiography, as the New York tycoon’s running mate, who waited until the last moment to announce his protégé on social media.
Republicans unanimously back JD Vance as Trump’s vice presidential nominee
There was much speculation regarding who might be the vice presidential pick, but Trump’s influence in the party was such that delegates confessed they would support any name he proposed.
The 78-year-old tycoon’s political career seemed doomed when he left the White House in 2021 defeated by the current president, Democrat Joe Biden, whom he falsely accused of electoral fraud, leading to the assault on the Capitol by thousands of Trump supporters.
Polls place him very close to the White House
But four years later he has total control of the political party and polls show him closer than ever to returning to the presidency despite all the open cases he faces in court.
By the time Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old, tried to kill him with a rifle for reasons that are still unknown, Trump already had the wind in his sails, having won by a landslide the June 27 election debate once morest a tired and confused Biden.
The failed assassination attempt, hailed as a miracle by many Republicans, further united the party in support of Trump, whose leadership appears tied for a long time.
Since the attack, Biden has called for a de-escalation, but many in the Republican Party deny that Trump played any role in the country’s heightened polarization.
“We Republicans don’t have to back down, we didn’t do anything wrong. We will continue to push and we will win this election,” former Republican congressman Madison Cawthorn, who attended the convention, told EFE.
Trump reappeared, but did not address his followers. He will wait until his turn on Thursday to generate even more expectations regarding whether or not he will make a call to reduce tensions.
At the end of the event on Monday, he walked down the stairs, slowly but steadily, as the convention bid farewell to its hero with a song that served as a declaration of intent: ‘Don’t Stop Believe in’.
