With the US presidential election just months away, Republican candidate Donald Trump vowed Thursday that if he returns to the White House, he would impose harsh punishments, including the death penalty, on illegal immigrants convicted of serious crimes.
In addition, the court pledged to introduce a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years for those convicted of organising human trafficking and life imprisonment for those convicted of trafficking minors.
At a campaign event in Cochise County, Arizona, Trump held a press conference just a few meters from the US-Mexico border.
Donald Trump promises death penalty for illegal immigrants
During his speech, he announced that he intends to impose “tough new sentences on illegal alien criminals,” including:
- Mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years for anyone convicted of human trafficking
- Life imprisonment guaranteed for anyone found guilty of child trafficking
- Death penalty for anyone guilty of sex trafficking of children or women
- Death penalty for major drug traffickers and drug dealers
- Death penalty for anyone convicted of killing police officers, sheriffs, border patrol agents, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, or other law enforcement officers
“We will make America safe again for our citizens,” the former president said.
