Ms Carroll left court smiling following the verdict, and was heard telling the crowd outside: ‘We are very happy’.
His attorney, Roberta Kaplan, later released a statement calling the verdict “a victory not only for E. Jean Caroll, but also for democracy itself and for all survivors around the world.”
Mr Trump had been accused of sexually assaulting Ms Carroll, 79, in a department store and then defaming the writer by claiming she made up his story.
A jury of six men and three women spent three hours deciding the civil assault and defamation charges in the case. It also concluded that Mr Trump defamed Ms Carroll in a social media post in October 2022, in which he called her allegations a “scam”.
The jury ordered Mr Trump to pay a total of $5 million in damages – $2 million for assault and $20,000 in punitive damages – and, for defamation, $2.7 million dollars in compensation and $280,000 in punitive damages.
