Donald Trump furiously called a “witch hunt” the verdict that he sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll.

The 76-year-old former President of the United States was ordered to pay $5 million in damages by a jury in federal court in New York on Tuesday (09.05.23) for assault and defamation against Mrs. Carroll. In the aftermath, he used his social media app Truth Social to denounce the decision as “unfair”.

He used his social media app Truth Social to denounce the decision as ‘unfair’: ‘I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHO THIS WOMAN IS. THIS VERDICT IS A SHAME – A CONTINUATION OF THE GREATEST HUNT TO WITCHES OF ALL TIMES!

Ms Carroll left court smiling after the verdict, and was heard telling the crowd outside: ‘We are very happy’.

His attorney, Roberta Kaplan, later released a statement calling the verdict “a victory not only for E. Jean Caroll, but also for democracy itself and for all survivors around the world.”

Mr Trump had been accused of sexually assaulting Ms Carroll, 79, in a department store and then defaming the writer by claiming she made up his story.

A jury of six men and three women spent three hours deciding the civil assault and defamation charges in the case. It also concluded that Mr Trump defamed Ms Carroll in a social media post in October 2022, in which he called her allegations a “scam”.

The jury ordered Mr Trump to pay a total of $5 million in damages – $2 million for assault and $20,000 in punitive damages – and, for defamation, $2.7 million dollars in compensation and $280,000 in punitive damages.
