Donald Trump: New York Post comments: “Florida man makes announcement” | politics

New York Post mocks Trump

The “New York Post” fires a full broadside once morest ex-US President Donald Trump (76)!

The conservative US tabloid commented on the announcement of Trump’s renewed presidential candidacy with sarcasm dripping with scorn. At the bottom of the front page was a line: “Florida man makes announcement.” Then follows a reference to page 26.

There the reader will find a short text: “On Tuesday evening, just 720 days before the next election, a retiree from Florida surprisingly announced that he was running for the presidency.” Pure irony!

And further: The “enthusiastic golfer Donald J. Trump” made the announcement “that no political expert saw coming” in Mar-a-Lago, “his resort and his library for secret documents”.

A clear allusion by the US newspaper to the secret document affair surrounding Trump. In the summer, the FBI searched his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida – and found all kinds of things top-secret documents the former president took from the White House.

Here app users come to the poll: Should Trump be president once more?

The “New York Post” also jokes regarding Trump’s age: If he were elected in 2024, he would be 78 years old – and thus the same age as US President Joe Biden when he took office. In the last election campaign, Trump had criticized Biden as far too old for the highest office in the USA. Referring to his health, the US newspaper wrote: “His cholesterol levels are unknown, but his favorite food is grilled steak with ketchup.”

The line is also a pun on a well-known internet meme: Headlines beginning with the words “Florida Man…” often predominate over irrational or absurd reports from the US state.

Trump announced on Tuesday evening in Mar-a-Lago that he would run once more in the 2024 presidential election and want to retake the White House. The announcement was expected. But it came at a time when the right-wing populist was politically stricken following the weak performance of his Republicans in last week’s midterm elections.

Friend becomes foe?

The media of the conservative billionaire Rupert Murdoch – in addition to the “New York Post” including the newspaper “Wall Street Journal” and the right-wing conservative news channel “Fox News” – had already clearly distanced themselves from Trump following the midterms and described him as “ Republican losers.

A clear turnaround in reporting: Trump has been consistently positive in recent years, and he has always been highly praised, especially by “Fox News”.

Observers did not miss the fact that the broadcaster repeatedly got out of the live broadcast of Trump’s more than one-hour speech on Tuesday evening and let his moderators have their say.

Trump will have to prevail in the Republican primary for the 2024 presidential nomination. The 76-year-old may be politically ailing, but he remains immensely popular with the right-wing electorate.
