Seven Republican contenders for the 2024 presidential election engaged in an electric televised debate, shooting their sharpest arrows in the direction of Donald Trump.
It was during a debate tinged with chaos that seven of the contenders for the Republican Party nomination for the 2024 presidential election fiercely opposed each other on Wednesday, while targeting President Joe Biden and the leader of the polls, Donald Trump, largely absent from the event.
These candidates, whose combined support is less than that of the former president alone, had the difficult task of convincing voters and donors that the outcome of this race was not a given, despite Donald Trump’s apparent lead. Except that none was able to really stand out, thus reinforcing the latter’s leading position in this race.
The dominant themes of the debate, such as inflation, immigration, China, and drugs from Mexico (…) were unable to highlight the differences between the candidates.
The prevailing opinion remains that Donald Trump will likely be the Republican candidate for the next election. He simply snubbed this debate, preferring to travel to Detroit for an election campaign speech. It must be said that the ex-president enjoys a strange paradox: his popularity has continued to rise despite the series of accusations and trials targeting him this year.
Although the moderators struggled to maintain order, this debate therefore turned out to be less significant than the previous onewhich notably allowed candidates such as Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy to gain visibility in the polls.
The debate on the merits
The dominant themes of the debate, such as inflation, immigration, China, and drugs from Mexico, reflected the weaknesses attributed to Democratic President Joe Biden. But they were unable to highlight the differences between the candidates.
Following his notable confrontations with Vivek Ramaswamy during the last debate, Nikki Haley continued to launch harsh criticism of the 38-year-old entrepreneur. For his part, the latter, despite a brief jump in the polls following the previous debate, opted for a more moderate approach. It must be said that he found himself in the crosshairs of his rivals from the start, in particular that of Senator Tim Scott, who pointed the finger at his old trade relations with China.
“If you keep this up, no one will call you Donald Trump, they will call you Donald Duck.”
Chris Christie
Former Governor of New Jersey
Chris Christie, fiercely anti-Trump, has struggled to gain popularity, despite his repeated criticism of the former president. The former governor of New Jersey did not hesitate to hit Donald Trump for his absence.
“Donald, I know you’re watching us”, he said, pointing his finger at the camera. “You are not here tonight, not because of the polls, not because of your indictments, but because you are afraid. You are afraid to come on this platform to defend your record. If you continue, no one will call you Donald Trump anymore, they will call you Donald Duck“, he said, the word “duck” in English meaning “duck”, but also “to dodge”.
The intimate life of Mike Pence
Finally, let’s note Tim Scott’s nice dig at France. While the social conflict in the automobile sector is in full swing, the Republican senator from South Carolina assured, under a veil of barely concealed contempt, that the UAW union wanted “a four-day French-style work week”. The French will appreciate…
“Joe Biden’s climate policy is good for Beijing, terrible for Detroit.”
Mike Pence
Former American vice president
Former Vice President Mike Pence took the opportunity to launch a scathing dig at the octogenarian Democratic president, who rallied American auto workers on their strike line on Tuesday.“Joe Biden has no place on a picket line. He belongs in the unemployment line”he said.
He added that “Joe Biden’s climate policy is good for Beijing, terrible for Detroit”, referring to the birthplace of the United States automobile.
Finally, in the final surrealist moment of the debate, this fervent believer surprised the assembly by briefly alluding to his intimate life live on American television, so puritanical. “My wife is not a member of the teachers’ union, but I must say that I have been sleeping with a teacher for 38 years“, he blurted, eliciting laughter. He was reacting to a criticism from Chris Christie towards President Joe Biden, who, according to him, “is sleeping with a union member”, in reference to First Lady Jill Biden.
