Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was injured during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania (USA) on Saturday, July 13.

Security officials removed Donald Trump from the stage following gunshots were heard at the venue. The shooting began shortly following Trump began his speech at the event.

In videos posted on social media, Trump is seen holding his ear and later blood is seen at this point and on part of his face. The former president later confirmed that a bullet had gone through his right ear.

As he was being evacuated from the scene, his face covered in blood, Trump told his supporters: “Fight, fight, fight” with his fist raised.

The Butler County (Pennsylvania) district attorney confirmed to the media CBS News that two people died in the shooting, including the attacker.

How is Donald Trump doing?

Following the incident, the head of communications for the US Secret Service, Anthony Guglielmi, assured that the former US president is “safe.”

“An incident occurred on the evening of July 13 at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe. This is now an active Secret Service investigation and more information will be released when it becomes available,” Guglielmi wrote on his X account.

Authorities have urged calm among the thousands of people who attended the rally, which took place just before the start of the Republican convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

According to the EFE news agency, there was a strong police presence, the Secret Service and a helicopter in the area where the incident occurred.

Trump campaign spokesman Steve Cheung agreed that the Republican candidate is doing well. He added that he is being examined by doctors.

“Former President Trump thanks security and first responders for their swift response to this despicable act. He is doing well and is being treated at a local medical facility,” the spokesman said in a statement.

What Donald Trump said

Former President Donald Trump confirmed that the bullet he received at the rally in Pennsylvania went through the top of his right ear.

“I knew immediately something was wrong because I heard a whistling sound, gunshots and immediately felt the bullet go through my skin,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

The former president thanked the U.S. Secret Service and all law enforcement authorities for their response to the violence in Butler. He also expressed his condolences to the family of the person who died during the incident, as well as to the other person who was seriously injured.

The reactions

Following the news, some politicians have expressed their rejection of what happened. US President Joe Biden expressed his gratitude to the country’s Secret Service for protecting the Republican candidate.

“I am glad to hear that (Donald Trump) is safe and well. I am praying for him, his family and everyone who was at the rally. There is no place for this type of violence in the US. We must come together as a nation to condemn it,” the US president wrote on his X account.

Former President Barack Obama has joined in the comments criticizing the events at Trump’s campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

“There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. While we still don’t know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump was not seriously injured,” he said.

The president of the Vox party (Spanish right), Santiago Abascal, spoke out regarding what happened, which he considered an “assassination attempt” once morest former President Trump.

“Thank God Donald Trump has survived the assassination attempt. We must stop the globalist left that is sowing hatred, ruin and war,” he wrote on his X account.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico, rejected what happened during Donald Trump’s rally and agreed with President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum in condemning this type of violence.

“In any case, we condemn what happened to former President Donald Trump. The violence is irrational and inhumane,” the Mexican leader said on his social media.

South African entrepreneur Elon Musk also used his X account to express his support for Trump, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Marco Rubio, a senator from Florida (USA), shared a photograph of the presidential candidate on X in which he can be seen raising his arm and with blood on his face.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro also condemned the incident in which Donald Trump was injured, wishing him “health and a long life.”

“On behalf of all of Venezuela, I want to reject and repudiate the attack once morest President Donald Trump and wish him a speedy recovery. We have been adversaries, but I wish President Trump good health and a long life,” Maduro said during a political event in the state of Carabobo.
