On a day off from his criminal trial in a Manhattan court, former President Donald Trump made a grand return to the campaign trail with back-to-back rallies in two battleground states. Despite facing charges of falsifying business records and appearing weary in court, Trump exuded energy and enthusiasm during his speech to a crowd of ardent supporters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
During the rally, Trump touched upon his core campaign themes, including immigration, the economy, foreign policy, and his opposition to President Joe Biden. He took pride in his ability to speak off the cuff, veering away from scripted remarks, which he often criticizes Biden for relying on.
Addressing his legal troubles, Trump voiced his dissatisfaction with the judicial process, claiming to have been indicted for no valid reason and accusing the judge of bias. Despite the ongoing trial, he expressed confidence in his poll numbers, which reflect a close race with Biden.
A recent Emerson College Polling/The Hill swing state survey indicates that Biden is slightly trailing Trump in Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. This finding comes as a surprise to many of Trump’s supporters, who believe that his trial will eventually boost his popularity and sway voters in his favor.
One supporter, Nancy Ridge from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, even exhibited her loyalty by wearing a jacket adorned with Trump’s mugshot and the words “Wanted: for president.” Ridge and others share the belief that the trial will shed light on the alleged corruption within the justice system, ultimately increasing Trump’s appeal among lower-class individuals who can relate to unfair treatment by the system.
Although the trial exposes Trump to both positive and negative publicity, fans like Jerry Cleppe acknowledge that any attention is valuable. Cleppe stated, “It doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad, it’s attention. The trial is a good thing.”
In addition to addressing his legal concerns, Trump also seized the opportunity to comment on pro-Palestinian student protests at US colleges. He praised the New York Police Department for clearing an occupied building at Columbia University, expressing his support for eradicating encampments on campuses and restoring a safe learning environment for students.
Furthermore, Trump weighed in on the topic of abortion, emphasizing his view that the legality of abortion should be determined by individual states rather than a federal mandate. He believes that allowing states to establish their own laws on the matter contributes to people’s satisfaction.
After the successful rally in Wisconsin, Trump proceeded to host another event in Michigan. His return to court in Manhattan is scheduled for Thursday, where the trial continues.
