Donald Trump can be sued for his role in the attack on the Capitol

The US Department of Justice has ruled in an official document that Donald Trump is not protected by presidential immunity and can be sued in civil proceedings by victims of the Capitol assault.

Police and congressmen are seeking damages from the Republican they accuse of encouraging his supporters to attack the Capitol on January 6, 2021. In a fiery speech, Donald Trump called on his supporters to fight once morest the results of the presidential election.

He had asked the courts to close these files, invoking his presidential immunity. However, the Justice Department ruled that presidential immunity did not cover “incitement” to violence. If the court of appeal validates this reasoning, the complaints can resume their course. In addition, Donald Trump is also the subject of a criminal investigation for his role in this assault.
