ATLANTA.– On a historic day, Donald Trump became this Thursday the first former president of the United States to be registered with a rap sheetwhich included his photograph, in a Georgia state prison, where he was held for about 20 minutes before paying a $200,000 bail, accused of illicit association and electoral conspiracy for trying to reverse the result of the 2020 presidential election.
After being released, Trump described the criminal proceedings as “electoral interference” in the race for the White House, for which the former president starts as a favorite among the Republican candidates. “What happened here is a travesty of justice. We didn’t do anything wrong. I didn’t do anything wrong,” he told reporters as he prepared to leave Atlanta.
Shortly before traveling to Georgia, Trump blamed the “radical left” for his arrest. “I have to start preparing to head to Atlanta, where murders and other violent crimes have reached levels never seen before, to be arrested by a radical left-wing district attorney, Fani Willis,” Trump said in a message on Truth Social.
The 77-year-old Republican leader was booked in the Fulton County Jail, Atlanta – an overcrowded and unsanitary prison, known as the Rice Street Jail – which was surrounded by a tight security perimeter as hordes of journalists and dozens of supporters descended on the scene.
