Dominican Republic on alert for indirect effects of Hurricane Beryl

Dominican Republic began to feel the indirect effects of Hurricane Beryl on Tuesday, which The country’s emergency services are on alert to deal with any contingency resulting from the advance of the phenomenon, which has already caused damage in several Caribbean countries.

Beryl, a Category 5 storm, is heading for Jamaica and threatening southern Dominican Republic and Haiti, according to forecasts on the phenomenon, the first hurricane of the Atlantic season and remains a dangerous system with maximum sustained winds of 270 kilometers per hour (165 miles per hour).

Given this situation, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) placed 24 of the country’s 32 provinces on alert, two of them, Barahona and Pedernales (southwest) in red (maximum), and where the indirect effects of the hurricane are already being felt, which led Civil Defense to begin preventive evacuations and educational authorities to suspend teaching.

Meanwhile, fifteen districts, including Santo Domingo and the National District, are on yellow alert (intermediate), and another seven are on green (the lowest).

The COE, which warns of the deterioration of maritime conditions in the coming hours, recommends that vessels remain in port from Miches (El Seibo) to Isla Beata, given the danger and strong waves generated by this tropical system.

He also urged the population to refrain from approaching the coast to observe the strong waves that Hurricane Beryl will generate, in order to avoid suffering damage from debris thrown up by probable abnormal waves.

Authorities adopt preventive measures

Authorities are continuing to take preventive measures on Tuesday, including those of the Ministry of Labor, which called on companies to make working hours more flexible in provinces where there is a red alert.
