BALTIMORE — Minnesota Twins infielder Miguel Sanó will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and there is no timetable for his return, manager Rocco Baldelli said Tuesday.
The Dominican entered the 10-day disabled list on Monday. He was injured April 26 while celebrating Minnesota’s 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers, a game that was decided on the last play.
Sanó returned to play on Saturday, but left due to knee pain.
“He tried to play, but he did something during the game and we had to take him out,” Baldelli acknowledged.
Sano wasn’t in the clubhouse for Tuesday’s game once morest the Orioles. Baldelli indicated that the procedure will take place this week.
“He was definitely in favor of having it done and I think our medical team was on board with it,” Baldelli said.
It is unknown how long Sano will be out.
“I don’t have a date,” Baldelli added.
It’s been a tough season for Sanó, 28, who has a .093 batting average (5-for-54) with one home run. To make matters worse he will miss time following getting injured during the post-match celebration.
“There is no way to talk regarding (the injury) without mentioning it,” the manager said. “But frankly, complaining regarding it doesn’t accomplish anything. He just wants to perform (the surgery) as soon as possible to get back on the field.”
Sanó came to the major leagues with the Twins in 2015 and has been with the team his entire career. He hit 34 home runs in 2019 and 30 the previous season.
