Friday July 29: Midnight Groovers

This formation criss-crossed Martinique and Guadeloupe in the early 70s, with hits like “Talon haut” “Anita”

Originally from Grand Bay, under the impetus of the mythical singer Chubby, Midnight Groovers evokes everyday life by castigating violence, social and economic inequalities, injustice, police brutality and slavery. The musicians promote cultural awareness and Caribbean pride.

We remember this milestone event that set this country ablaze. The song ‘Pou yon coco’ is a reflection of this, denouncing the degrading treatment inflicted on poor citizens by the authorities in 1975.

Chubby was harshly and unfairly condemned for picking some coconuts from the estate of a wealthy businessman.

During this first evening, different groups will evolve: First Serenade, Pato (Black Roots), Lobster, Rsb-Roots Stems and Branches, White Fayrie and Sixth Form Sisserou Singers. Note, the presence, that evening, of the Martinican Stephane Ravor.
