Dominic Thiem fights his way into the second round of the ATP 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy.
After the 30-year-old from Lower Austria successfully qualified for the main draw, he defeated the Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka (ATP 51st) in the first round of the Masters following more than two and a half hours of play in three sets with 3:6, 6:3, 7:5.
The game doesn’t end until shortly before 2:30 a.m. In the live ranking, the Lichtenwörther native jumps back into the top 100 and is currently in 92nd place.
In the fight for a round of 16 ticket, a tough challenge awaits Holger Rune (ATP 7th). The 20-year-old Dane won his only duel this year at the ATP Masters in Monte Carlo in two sets.
Thiem shows morale and fends off a match point
The start to the game is a bit bumpy for Thiem, Wawrinka quickly stands up to him, acts confidently in his own service and has two break chances at 2-1, which Thiem fends off. At 3:4 from the ÖTV star’s point of view, the Swiss has three more break points, of which he uses the last one and then saves it to take the lead in the set.
In the second set, the Lower Austrian found an antidote to the 38-year-old’s strong service, breaking Wawrinka to zero once. Thiem then successfully fends off two chances from the Swiss for a rebreak, only to give up his next service game. This time Thiem managed the break to make it 5:3 and win the set.
In the deciding set, Thiem looked confident on his own serve and didn’t allow a breakball until deep into the set – there were twelve in the first two sets alone. But Wawrinka takes advantage of the only chance that presents itself when the score is 4:3 and then has the chance to serve for the match. Thiem thwarts a match point and manages the rebreak.
He confirms his following serve without any problems and gets two break opportunities once more with Serve Wawrinka. Thiem leaves the first one carelessly, but the second one works following Wawrinka hits a backhand out of bounds. The Swiss’s resistance was then broken and Thiem won with a clean sheet.
In the head-to-head with the 38-year-old US Open winner from 2016, the 2020 triumphant is 2:3. The Lichtenwörthers’ only victory to date came almost ten years ago at the 2014 Masters in Madrid.
