GRAND FORKS, ND — Jordan Jones, Emma Smith and Angelina Robles combined to score 49 of Denver’s 65 total points, but the Pioneers fell to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 75-65 on the road Thursday.

The Pioneers (7-18, 4-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Jones, who had 20 points and two steals. Smith tacked on 15 points, five assists and four steals and Robles helped out with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Led by Makayla Minett’s four offensive rebounds, Denver did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.

The Denver defense was a problem in Thursday’s game, forcing 18 North Dakota turnovers while committing 13. Those takeaways turned into 26 points on the offensive end of the floor. Smith’s four steals led the way individually for the Pioneers.

How It Happened

Denver struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Denver then started off the second quarter by going on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a three from Mary Wilson, to narrow its deficit to 21-17. North Dakota responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Pioneers trailing 34-23 heading into halftime.

North Dakota continued to increase its lead following halftime, building a 37-23 advantage before Denver went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Smith, to trim its deficit to 37-29 with 8:09 to go in the third. North Dakota countered and stretched its lead to 54-35 heading into the fourth. Denver knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.

Denver narrowed its deficit to 62-45 before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Robles’ layup, to shrink the deficit to 62-56 with 4:50 to go in the contest. North Dakota responded and outscored the Pioneers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 75-65. Denver fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 30 points.
