1 – 0
Charleroi has dealt with KV Kortrijk without too much trouble. After 10 minutes, the final score was already on the board thanks to Heymans. After that, the Carolo’s hit the post twice more, but a reassuring second did not fall. Charleroi jumps to place 3 thanks to the 3rd victory of the season, KVK parks itself in place 12.
Charleroi – KV Kortrijk in a nutshell:
After just under ten minutes, Charleroi takes the lead when Heymans shows his torrinstint on a corner kick from Zorgane. The tone is set immediately and Charleroi does not relinquish control. Kortrijk has to passively endure the match.
Four goals in five games. The competition could not have started better for Daan Heymans. He now leads the top scorers list together with Tolu Arokodare of Racing Genk, but could actually have been the top scorer alone. Gunnarsson and the post prevented him from his fifth and sixth goals tonight.
Winning on the field of Charleroi, Kortrijk has not succeeded in doing that since 25 August 2018. Exactly 6 years ago today. Since then, it has drawn three times in Charleroi and lost just as many times.
Heymans does it again for Charleroi
And whether they fly in smoothly this season with Daan Heymans. He needed less than ten minutes to give Charleroi the lead. On a corner kick from Zorgane he was there like a shot to head in his fourth league goal.
Ten minutes later, Heymans should have had a golden opportunity to score his fifth goal of the season, but the hesitant Guiagon strangled the promising attack, much to Heymans’ anger.
With a magnificent shot in one go, the same Guiagon almost wiped out his mistake. Almost, because his goal was rightly disallowed for offside by provider Bernier.
An immature KV Kortrijk escaped worse, but could not make a fist themselves at any time. Charleroi was lord and master, the visitors stood by and watched.
Doelhout and Gunnarsson prevent heavier loss for Kortrijk
Guiagon also played himself into the spotlight in the second half, but things continued to go wrong for the Ivorian. He took a swing at a loose ball in one go, saw his shot deflect slightly and eventually hit the post. Kortrijk escaped the 2-0.
The visitors could not change the game pattern from the first half after the break. The return of Brecht Dejaegere did not help either. On the contrary, Kortrijk got away with it again when Heymans decided on Gunnarsson from close range in one go.
Kortrijk could counter with a shot from Takamine, but it was no more than a flare-up. It even became a bloodbath for the visitors when Fujii headed Alebiosu in the back of the head. For both players it was immediately game over.
Despite their dominance, Charleroi remained stuck at a narrow lead. Zorgane offered Heymans another chance for a second goal, but again the post spoiled the fun for the home team.
The tension remained for a while, but Charleroi did not give up the three points and thus booked its third victory in five matches. With that, Rik De Mil’s team jumped to third place.

Heymans: “Played well in the first half”
- Daan Heymans (Charleroi): “I hope I can continue this line in the coming weeks. In the first half we played top. We got a lot of pleasure from that, but unfortunately we didn’t manage to keep that up for 90 minutes. That’s a bit of a problem this season: we always dominate one half and then retreat a bit too much in the second. That’s something to work on. Kortrijk has shown more offensively in recent weeks than today, but that’s also our merit. In the first half we had 77 percent ball possession and gave them few chances to attack. We just should have scored that second goal sooner.”
- Brecht Dejaegere (KV Kortrijk): “It’s nice to be back at Kortrijk, but I would have preferred to get points today. We weren’t there at the start and opted for the long ball too much. In the second half we responded well, but we didn’t find that goal. We also had that setback with Fujii. I saw that there was a lot of blood at that moment, but I don’t know how he is doing now. We definitely wanted to get a point today, but now we just have to take the three points at home next week.”
- Rik De Mil (coach Charleroi): “We played a fantastic first half. Dominant on the ball, gave nothing away and created chances. The only thing that needs to improve is the efficiency. Of course there were also a few moments when we were unlucky, such as with that offside goal, but sometimes we just have to play it out better. We have to kill the game faster, otherwise it will remain exciting until the end. I am very satisfied with the 9 out of 15, but especially with the game. It is sometimes still a bit inconsistent, but there is room for improvement. We now have to become more consistent.”
- Freyr Alexandersson (coach KV Kortrijk): “Charleroi completely dominated in the first half. If you can’t win the duels and also lose on the second balls, then you can’t get the momentum on your side. We had a very difficult time in the first half. But after the break we were the better team and we managed to win the duels. Still, we couldn’t force any chances, so it is certainly a deserved victory for Charleroi. How is Fujii doing? It looks terrible, his lip is completely in pieces. Fortunately he doesn’t have to play with his lip and he doesn’t say much either. So he should be able to play next week.”
End
Charleroi booked their third victory in five games. A more than deserved victory, although the margin was ultimately very narrow. An early goal by Heymans, his fourth this season, was enough to put a weak Kortrijk aside. The woodwork and Gunnarsson prevented the score from getting any higher.
Mampassi heads over
It is still anxiously awaiting the final whistle for Charleroi. Mampassi can actually head from close range, but he fails to keep the ball low.
There will be 6 minutes of added time.
Lagae heads over Koné
Kortrijk can once again pose a threat on a free kick. In a duel with Petris, Lagae can head, but not dangerous enough to cause Koné any problems.
Yellow for Kadri
Kadri expresses his displeasure a little too conspicuously about a decision by referee Van Damme. He is shown a yellow card.
Tension remains
Kortrijk does come out on top in the final phase and actually forces two corners in a row, but they do not lead to a concrete chance. Despite the clear superiority, it remains very tight for Charleroi. The spoils are not yet in.
Paal prevents 2-0 again!
Once again, the post spoils the fun for Charleroi. This time it is Heymans who heads the ball onto the crossbar after a pass from Zorgane. Gunnarsson escapes unscathed, Heymans is disappointed. He could have scored three times tonight.
Fujii and Alebiosu cannot continue their match. They are replaced by Mampassi and De Neve at Kortrijk.
Battlefield near Kortrijk
What an unfortunate moment for Fujii and Alebiosu. The Japanese man hits Alebiosu’s head full on and blood gushes from his mouth. It looks like his lip is torn and Alebiosu also needs treatment on his head.
