Domestic violence crimes continue to rock Iraq without accountability or control. Despite all efforts to end it, it is on the rise.

In the continuation of this violent series, another crime shook Iraqi circles, following a woman burned her pregnant daughter-in-law in Najaf Governorate.

I poured gasoline on her

The perpetrator poured gasoline on the young woman while she was cooking and set her on fire, then left her and ran away, until the neighbors heard the screams of their neighbor and rushed to save her.

What made matters worse was that the victim’s family confirmed that the police had taken the offender’s statement and left the victim behind.

The victim’s brother also explained that his sister was preparing food in the kitchen, when she felt liquid being poured on her, and as soon as she turned around, she felt a fire consuming her body.

He revealed that the victim’s husband, father and brothers were present during the crime.

In turn, a medical source from the hospital stated that third-degree wounds affected more than 65% of the body of the 21-year-old woman, whose father confirmed that he had informed the authorities to act and take his daughter’s right.

No signs of a solution soon

It is noteworthy that cases of domestic violence in Iraq are increasing in an alarming and steady manner, without looming signs of relief in the absence of a law that limits it and protects the victims of this violence, who are mostly women and children.

What further complicates the scene is that the battered women do not find anyone to take refuge with them, in the absence of sufficient safe havens to receive the large and increasing numbers of victims of domestic violence crimes in the country, which hardly number the fingers of one hand.

It is mentioned that Article “41” of the Iraqi Penal Code stipulates that it is not a crime if the act (beating) occurs in the use of a right established by law, and it is considered a use of the right, the husband’s discipline of his wife and the discipline of parents, teachers and those in their status of minor children within the limits of what is prescribed by law, law or custom. “.

This crime sparked widespread anger on social media, amid calls for the most severe penalties for the perpetrators to be an example to others.
