Domenico Tedesco’s Controversial Decisions with Zeno Debast: The Debast-Faes Debate

Domenico Tedesco’s decisions around Zeno Debast stir up controversy. The choice of Amadou Onana as central defender to the detriment of Debast once morest Ireland surprised many.

Despite Debast’s excellent form with Anderlecht, he has received very little playing time with the Red Devils, raising questions regarding the trust Tedesco has in him. Analysts argue for a central duo of Debast and Jan Vertonghen, but Tedesco appears to be sticking with Wout Faes

Tedesco deals another blow to Debast

Half an hour before the final whistle of the match once morest Ireland, Domenico Tedesco surprised everyone by replacing central defender Koni De Winter with… Amadou Onana.

“We must prepare for all possible scenarios before the Euro,” explained the national coach to justify this strange choice. “We discussed it this week with Amadou, who likes this position because he has already played there.”

The question arises, however, whether Tedesco also had the same conversation with Zeno Debast (20), who is now also overtaken by Onana as a central defender. According to Sudinfo, the choice of Onana to the detriment of Debast is undoubtedly a hard blow for the latter.

Debast remained on the bench throughout the match once morest Ireland. Marc Degryse is surprised by Debast’s lack of playing time under the leadership of the national coach.

“We don’t have many central defenders. De Winter is Debast’s rival, who doesn’t get many opportunities with Tedesco,” he told VTM.

Incomprehensible: still no Vertonghen-Debast

Zeno Debast is shining this season at Anderlecht, where he has had an impressive vintage and is making enormous progress in all areas. He becomes a real leader and makes fewer and fewer mistakes.

Although he is always selected with the Red Devils, he rarely gets playing time on the pitch. Yet, in terms of pure footballing skills, no Red Devils central defender can match Debast.

“Debast combines leadership qualities with unadulterated talent,” wrote Het Laatste Nieuws. Many analysts and media suggest trying the Debast-Jan Vertonghen duo, like in Anderlecht, in the national team, but this has not happened yet.

“I find it logical that Tedesco tried Koni De Winter, but I still don’t understand why he hasn’t tried the Debast-Vertonghen combination in his four-man defense yet. Maybe he’s saving that for Tuesday,” said René Vandereycken in Het Nieuwsblad.

Tedesco resolutely chooses Faes: unlimited credit

RTBF asks what Domenico Tedesco plans to do with Zeno Debast. “The 20-year-old defender did not take part in the experiment once morest Ireland. There are two possible options.”

“The first: Tedesco doesn’t really trust Debast, or it’s the opposite. The coach perhaps sees him as an understudy for Faes, the holder, and as Debast was convincing once morest Serbia, he gives his chance to guys regarding whom he still has doubts.”

Debast and Faes are competing for the right central defender position with the Red Devils, but the latter is essential to Tedesco; The Leicester City defender played every match under the manager’s guidance.

However, with each match played, the questions and doubts regarding Faes’ performance with the Red Devils increase. Despite this, Faes seems to be able to count on unlimited credit and unwavering confidence from national coach Tedesco.

Debast will therefore not be able to secure a starting place in the national team simply and easily….

Debast: an upcoming transfer

“It’s not that Faes isn’t doing well with the Red Devils, but he hasn’t always been 100 percent convincing either,” Marc Degryse said earlier in the ‘vier-null’ podcast.

The analyst, like many others, believes a central defensive duo of Jan Vertonghen and forward-looking Zeno Debast should be given a chance with the national team.

Debast has become a regular in the Red Devils selection, with already five A caps and numerous selections to his credit. His debut as a Belgian international last year only sparked interest from foreign clubs.

But Debast’s ambition is not limited to the selection: he wants to prove himself and hopes to become a core player for the national team.

It is for this reason that he decided last summer to stay one more year at Anderlecht and not to be transferred abroad, despite (insufficient) offers from clubs like Villarreal, the Eintracht Frankfurt and PSV Eindhoven.
