“Domenico Puddu, Charged with Neighbor’s Murder in Charleroi, Testifies at Assizes Despite Furious State”

The trial of Domenico Puddu began on Tuesday morning at the Assize Court of Hainaut. In 2019, the accused, a 70-year-old retiree, murdered his neighbor, Jean-Yves Wargnies, who was doing work in his house. Wargnies was a well-known and appreciated personality in the Charleroi region. The President of the Hainaut Assize Court, Adrien Van der Linden d’Hoogvoorst, questioned Domenico Puddu about the assassination that occurred in December 2019.

In September 2015, Jean-Yves Wargnies purchased a shed on rue du Congo to convert into lofts. The accused quickly became overwhelmed by the noise of the construction and had heated discussions with the neighbors. In 2016, Wargnies filed a complaint against the accused for threats. The accused claimed he had no weapon at home at the time. However, he had a weapon that he buried, but dug up in 2016 after being threatened by drug addicts and illegal dumpers behind his home. The accused claims he never used the weapon again until the day of the murder.

On December 30, 2019, Puddu fired at Wargnies twice, killing him. The accused claims he initially shot in the air after going to Wargnies’ house to ask him to stop making noise. After a first shot hit Wargnies’ buttocks, the accused chased him down the street and finished him off with a shot to the head. The accused regretted his actions and claimed he was in a mad rage at the time of the murder.

A long-awaited trial began this Tuesday morning at the Assize Court of Hainaut, that of Domenico Puddu. In 2019, this 70-year-old retiree killed his neighbor who was doing work in his house. The victim was someone known and appreciated in the Charleroi region.

The president of the Hainaut Assize Court, Adrien Van der Linden d’Hoogvoorst, questioned Domenico Puddu this Tuesday morning about the assassination of Jean-Yves Wargnies, which occurred on December 30, 2019 in Marchienne-au- Bridge (Charleroi).

In September 2015, Jean-Yves Wargnies bought a shed, which he wanted to convert into lofts, on rue du Congo. The accused, a hardened bachelor who left his region of the Center for Marchienne-au-Pont, because of neighborhood problems, was quickly overwhelmed by the noise of the works.

The victim had filed a complaint against the accused in 2016

The neighbors have heated discussions. In 2016, Jean-Yves Wargnies filed a complaint against the accused, for threats. The accused is said to have mimed a shot, declaring that he was not afraid to shoot. “The noise of the circular saw was unbearable. I told him that I was able to fire a shotgun, but I had no weapon at home. In the bag, there was only my hand”, he said.

However, he had a weapon at home, bought in 1999. “I buried her. I dug her up in 2016 after being threatened by drug addicts and illegal dumpers behind my home.” The accused claims to have never used this weapon, between 2016 and December 30, 2019. That day, he fired twice at Jean-Yves Wargnies, in the middle of the morning.

When the process started, it got out of hand

“I went to ask him to stop making noise. That day, I hadn’t called the police, like the day before and the day before. I went to see him. I don’t know what “he answered me and I shot in the air. I went home to load the gun. I was out of control, I wanted to stop the nuisance, not kill someone. I regret it. When the process started, it became uncontrollable. I was in a mad rage.

After a first shot, which hit the victim’s buttocks, the accused chased her down the street and finished her off with a shot in the head. “I didn’t know I had hit him when he jumped off the roof. Afterwards, I saw him crouching by a pole. I said to him: ‘ah, you called the police’. We were going around from the pole, and I fired. I aimed for his head. Afterwards, it seemed like the volcano died out. All the nervousness went away and I realized what I had done.”
