Author of an All-Star caliber season with the Kings, Domantas Sabonis nevertheless played for several months with a loose thumb. The interior of Sacramento has logically decided to take advantage of the summer to heal, even if it means sacrificing participation in the World Cup with Lithuania.

Domantas Sabonis didn’t look like he was injured when he averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists this season in Sacramento, but the Lithuanian interior did suffer from a broken right thumb (fortunately he is left-handed, huh…). And we learn today via BasketNews that he was operated to remedy this injury dating from December 2022.

No timeline was given for Sabonis, but such an operation usually requires 4-6 weeks of rehabilitation. Translation: Domas will not play the World Cup, scheduled from August 25 to September 10. Lithuania coach Kazys Maksvytis says Sabonis initially wanted to avoid the surgery, but the surgery ended up being successful and the timing for a potential World Cup comeback is now too short. The Sacramento player therefore does not find himself on the (expanded) list of selected Lithuanian players for the competition, unlike Jonas Valanciunas who will be present.

The goal for Domantas Sabonis this summer will be to put this nasty thumb injury behind him for good, so that he can return 100% with the Kings during the next NBA season, then defend his country’s colors at the Olympic Games. Paris in 2024. As a reminder, Domas has just signed a five-year, $217 million extension with Sacramento. We imagine that the Californian franchise sees rather a good eye on its package at the World Cup in view of this XXL investment…
