Dogs’ noses have become a bane for the Chinese

Chinese facial recognition startup Magui has created an application that helps people find their lost dogs using photos of their unique noses.

Finding pets with facial recognition technology is not a new idea. What makes Magui unique, however, is its reliance on dogs’ noses. Apparently, dogs’ noses are as unique as humans’ fingerprints.

The app searches for missing dogs by matching nose images of dogs in its database. The app has an accuracy rate of 95 percent. Magui claims that the app’s procedure is cheaper and easier than inserting an identification chip under the animal’s skin.

For nearly a hundred years, kennel clubs around the world have used nose prints to register dogs. For this, a white paper is placed on the dogs’ noses with ink.

Magwi app has made this task easy. A pet dog owner only needs to take photos and videos of their dog. The app takes a pattern of specific areas of the dog’s nose and sends the details to an online database. This process creates a unique dog ID.

The app’s creators say that dogs’ noses are their most reliable identifying feature. Just like human fingerprints, dogs’ noses are unique. No two dogs have the same nose features or impressions. The nose pattern does not change as the dog grows. That is why they play an important role in dog identification.

The app claims that apart from identifying pet dogs, it can also be used to identify stray dogs and unruly dogs. Authorities can identify dogs littering public places this way, and the owner of an unruly dog can be fined more if they do it again.
