(CNN) A couple’s dog was stabbed by a man in New York City’s Central Park following an argument broke out between two dog owners. The New York City Police Department announced to CNN on the 19th.
The incident happened on the 17th. Police said a couple were walking their two dogs in the park when they ran into a man with three dogs, and the owners got into an argument as they tried to separate the dogs following they started fighting. The man allegedly pulled out a switchblade and stabbed one of the couple’s dogs.
No suspects have yet been arrested in connection with the incident.
Brian Cornwell, the owner of the stabbed dog, said the injured dog was euthanized following an ultrasound at the hospital revealed cancer.
Cornwell said he and his wife were walking Eli, a pitbull/shepherd mix, and Sadie, a miniature pinscher, when the miniature pitbull ran and tried to bite Sadie.
The pitbull’s owner insisted he was fine, but Cornwell retorted that he wasn’t okay, causing an argument.
Mr Cornwell said he tried to calm the situation down and left with his wife, but the man followed him. The man let three of his dogs off the leash, causing them to chase Sadie, and when his wife picked her up, they attacked 14-year-old Eli.
“I tried to separate them from mine and kicked one,” Cornwell said. He says the man tried to hit him so many times that he sprayed pepper spray on him, but it didn’t seem to work.
During the fight, the leads of three dogs became entangled in Eli’s neck and collar. When the man pulled out a knife as if to cut the lead, Eli growled and the man stabbed him.
“My dog was bleeding.
The man left with three dogs before police arrived on the scene.
Cornwell took Eli to a nearby hospital, where an ultrasound performed by a veterinarian revealed cancer. He was told he had regarding five months to live.
“I had to euthanize him. I didn’t want him to suffer,” Cornwell said.
Eli was a rescue dog that Cornwell rescued regarding 10 years ago. “We have dog beds in every room and he’s not there anymore. The best dog I’ve ever had.” Mr. Cornwell looked devastated when he said that.
